John Dashwood : Artist's Statement
My work is a weld between abstract composition and figurative narrative. The subject matter is a vehicle for the "message" within the painting, striving to create a sacred transaction betwwen myself and the work. I have undertaken a number of commission for large -scale murals in churches, theatres, hospitals community centres bars and clubs. It is important to me that a large body of my work is created for and installed in public places, where everyone can experience it.
I predominantly work in oil on canvas and board and execute my mural in acrylic. Drawing is an essential component of my creative process.
Over the years, I am increasingly influenced by the passion of Van Gogh, and the pictorial inventiveness of Picasso. My ultimate aim is to produce objects of contemplation that perform magic for the viewer.
